News - Planning for energy efficient cities (PLEEC)

PLEEC project presented at the World Renewable Energy Congress in London

The World Renewable Energy Congress took place at Kingston University in London from 3 to 8 August 2014.

At this occasion, Iana Vassileva from PLEEC project partner Mälardalen University, Västerås, held a vivid presentation about one of the PLEEC partner cities titled " Eskilstuna (Sweden) as an example of a smart city from an energy efficiency perspective".

After a general presentation of the PLEEC project she focused on the City of Eskilstuna as a good example of a small-medium sized city and its efforts towards energy efficiency and sustainability. In the presentation she highlighted some best practice examples which are being implemented in Eskilstuna like e.g. the sorting of waste in plastic bags of different colours, use of biogas for public busses, building renovation projects and their impact as well as the involvement of citizens in different activities related to energy and water savings.

PLEEC project shows presence at international events

Prof. Rudolf Giffinger, Head of the Centre of Regional Science at Vienna University of Technology and leader of PLEEC Work Package 2, has been representing and promoting PLEEC project at several international occasions:

At the 16th Baltic Development Forum Summit & 5th Annual Forum of the EUSBSR on 3 – 4 june 2014 in Turku (Finland) his presentation titled "Smart City - PLEEC - Planning Energy Efficient Cities in a place based way" focused on the different understandings of Smart City. On the background of the different concepts and the basic challenges which cities are recently experiencing the own place based understanding was elaborated. Special focus was put upon the elaboration of innovation potentials for individual cities which was applied in the run of the PLEEC project in collaboration with six medium sized partner cities in Europe.

Review: Inspiring presentations at lecture event “Planning for energy efficient cities” – Smart city planning at its best

Almost 40 participants attended the lecture event „Planning for energy efficient cities" on 18 june 2014 at Wälderhaus Hamburg.

After a warm welcome of the head of the Research and Transfer Centre "Applications of Life Sciences" Prof. Walter Leal, Florian Strohmayer from the Technical University of Vienna presented the first results and insights from the FP7-project PLEEC "Planning for energy efficient cities" which is aiming to develop a model for energy efficient and sustainable city planning (www.pleecproject.eu)

Registration open: BUP Summer Course on Energy Efficiency

BUP Summer Course on Energy Efficiency The German offices of the Baltic University Programme (BUP) in Hamburg and Zittau/Görlitz are organizing in cooperation with PLEEC project the annual BUP Summer Course. The event will take place from 16 to 20 September 2014 in the venues of the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz, Görlitz Campus.

The Summer Course is meant to acquaint delegates from various countries about matters related to energy efficiency in the Baltic as well as foster international and multicultural learning. The course will offer a state-of-the-art overview of matters related to energy efficiency and will be a timely contribution towards efforts in the internationalization, networking and cultural interaction among local government officials, practitioners and students from Baltic countries.

Round table “Environmental Governance in South Korea and Slovenia”

at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, 19th June 2014 - in the framework of the European Sustainable Energy Week

On 19 June 2014, the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, University of Ljubljana organises the round table "Environmental Governance in South Korea and Slovenia". The event is organised as part of Europe's biggest event on renewable energy and energy efficiency called "European Sustainable Energy Week" and in connection with the FP7 project PLEEC "Planning for Energy Efficient Cities" and the FP7 project TURAS "Transitioning Towards Urban Resilience and Sustainability" (www.turas-cities.eu). The event takes place from 9:00 till 17:00 hours at the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, University of Ljubljana (Jamova cesta 2, 1000 Ljubljana) and is free of charge. The language of the event is English.

Release: “Typology of European Smart Cities”

After the publication of "Smart City Profiles" of the six PLEEC cities, this report analyses cities´ performances on certain key aspects in a European perspective and in comparison. The typology allows for benchmarking and an easy identification of comparable cities in the European context. The full report can be downloaded here:

Typology of cities (D2.2)

City profiles will reveal the specific opportunities and threats that will confront cities on their innovation journey towards an energy-efficient development. Deliverable 2.2 analyses city performance on certain key aspects in a European perspective and in comparison. This typology allows for benchmarking and an easy identification of comparable cities in order to look for best practices and to gain some input for WP3-5 of the PLEEC project.

These reports describe the performance of the six participating PLEEC cities – Eskilstuna, Stoke-on-Trent, Tartu, Jyväskylä, Santiago de Compostela and Turku - according to their ability to deal with changing global trends as demographic change or economic transformation. They reveal the specific strengths and weaknesses of the cities and their potentials for challenging other cities in an increasing competitive situation.

PLEEC project partner TU Wien at the “International Conference of Innovative Cities” (CICI) in Brasil

The International Conference of Innovative Cities (CICI) (http://cici2014.com) was created in 2010 and aims to stimulate economic development focusing on the urgent need to transform urban environment into spaces of innovation and creativity.

This year the CICI2014 took place from 7 until 9 may at the Positivo University-UP, Curitiba/Paraná, Brazil, and featured the latest diversified and most potential innovative solutions for the cities of the 21st century as well as proposals of a new model of governance promoting both social and economic growth.

Lecture event “Planning for Energy Efficient Cities” in the framework of the EU Sustainable Energy Week

Planning for Energy Efficient CitiesOn 18 june 2014 the Research and Transfer Centre "Applications of Life Sciences" of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences organizes in cooperation with PLEEC project the lecture event "Planning for Energy Efficient Cities – Best Practices from International Research Projects". Representatives of international research projects on energy efficiency will present current strategies to increase energy efficiency on building level as well as on city level.
The event takes place from 18 to 21 hrs at Wälderhaus Hamburg (Am Inselpark 19, 21109 Hamburg) and is free of charge. The event language is German.

PLEEC project partner from TU Wien is keynote speaker at REALCORP 2014 conference

PLEEC project partner from TU Wien is keynote speaker at REALCORP 2014 conferenceFrom 21 to 23 May 2014 the conference REALCORP 2014 - 19th International Conference on Urban Planning, Regional Development and Information Society in Vienna will go deeply into the subject of smart cities and smartness and exchange knowledge on current topics such as:

  • What does "Smart City" mean in terms of quality of life?
  • How does it influence the economic perspectives?
  • Are the concepts of sustainability and resilience part of "Smart Cities"?
  • What about politics and administration, policies and governance?
  • How do "Smart Solutions" influence the "hardware" of a city, the urban fabric?
  • What is the role of urban/spatial planning in and for "Smart Cities"?

Review: Local Dialogue Forum in Jyväskylä

The Local Dialogue Forum in Jyväskylä took place on 8 May 2014 from 8.30 to 12 hrs in the City Hall of Jyväskylä.

After an introduction to PLEEC project, its objectives, activities and results, the participants split up in different workshops about the needs and opportunities of the city regarding energy efficient technologies, planning and behavior. Different domains - elaborated in the framework of the PLEEC project - have been discussed: Green buildings and land use, mobility and transport, technical infrastructure, production and consumption as well as energy supply.

The event gathered 13 participants representing a wide range of expertise from the city organization, energy utility, housing company, University of Applied Sciences as well as private sector energy efficiency experts. It featured an active and constructive dialogue between the different stakeholders and resulted in concrete ideas and suggestions on how to proceed in developing energy efficiency and renewable energy in the City of Jyväskylä in the respective PLEEC domains.
